2016 in Review

2016 has been a weird, chaotic year, but my year has been packed with adventures and new places to discover. This is my year in numbers:

6 - number of countries and territories visited: South Korea, Hong Kong, United States, Puerto Rico, Malaysia and Nepal


21 - number of foreign cities and towns visited: Seoul, Incheon, Jisan, Hong Kong, St Louis, Chesterfield, Creve Couer, Branson, Hollister, Ozark, Springfield, New York, Hackensack, Hoboken, San Juan, Kuala Lumpur, Sepang, Kathmandu, Nagarkot, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur.

20,000 - max elevation in feet, of the Buddha Air Beechcraft 1900 that flew around Mt. Everest. Everest is 29,029 feet tall.


25 - number of flights flown this year, including the Everest mountain flight

35,195 - the total distance in miles, for the 24 flights. I'm not sure how far we covered during the circuit from Kathmandu to Everest.


6730 - the distance, in miles, of the longest flight flown, between JFK and NRT

15 - the number of airports that I've flown in (or out) during the year: MNL, ICN, HKG, CEB, MPH, NRT, MSP, STL, ATL, JFK, SJU, KLO, KUL, KTM, ZAM

11 - amount in US$ I paid for my ticket from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico (plus 35,000 miles)

5 - in Philippine peso, the cost of a boat ride from Isabela to Malamawi Island in Basilan, Philippines


60 - in Nepali rupees, the cost of a serving of fried momos in a hole-in-the-wall stall in Thamel, Kathmandu.

1 - the number of times I cried after I crashed my Phantom 3 drone into the Tinipak River.

One of the main reasons why I am always drawn to museums when I travel is that I would want to see, in real life, the fascinating things that I've only read in books or have seen in the films, such as archaeological artifacts or the paintings of Van Gogh and Dali . Off the Beaten Track: Mapun, Tawi-Tawi

I’d ramble on and on the island (its location and the culture and the pretty spots...) but since the place is not really in any of the Philippines tourist spots and is in the middle of nowhere, I might as well talk about Atlantis instead. But the island does exist.  Mapun Tawi-Tawi or Cagayan de Sulu) is an island municipality in the Sulu Sea on the southwestern extreme of the Philippines, located very close to Sabah. How To Track Your Travels with Google Location History

Ever traveled to a place then forgot the name of that small shop that sells the best tasting cronuts you've ever had? Or have you ever wanted to retrace your steps in your travels, down to the smallest alleyways you passed along the way but couldn't? Here's a travel tool that enables you to do that - so well that it's cool and scary at the same time: the Google Location History. I use the service - which you need to enable on your mobile phone and Google account - to look back at my travels and generate some cool maps that retrace my steps during my trips. Google Maps, by itself, is an incredibly useful app already; I cannot count how many times I've used it when traveling to find my hostel, the nearest subway station, that cronut place.
